Synthetic doesn’t stink nearly as bad - that’s grounds for me to use it wherever possible.

Doesn’t it have more sulfur for wear purposes

Especially when you have to do all 3 diffs on a Toyota LC Lexus LX that is super hot and the customer is waiting. Worst smell

That’s what oil smells like. You ever drive through an oil town? That’s what half of Texas smells like.

High sulfur content for anti-wear.

This stuff’s still fake, though... I think. For now, anyway.

gear oil- especially that meant for hypoid gears like in a differential- can experience a tremendous amount of shear; the oil is squeezed between two surfaces sliding across each other with an enormous amount of force. the anti-shear extreme pressure (EP) additives contain a ton of sulfur, which gives it its characteristic stink.

while crude oil does have sulfur in it, it’s not why gear oil stinks. even full synthetic gear oil smells; it’s because the extreme-pressure (EP) shear-stabilizing additives contain sulfur.

I changed motorcycle fork oil at 40K miles, and I thought I was going to throw up.

I like the smell of gasoline and motor oil. Brake fluid and gear oil are nasty though.

If they made seasonal scent motor oil, people would actually get it changed.

So the icky gear lube smell is primarily sulfur?

When I was a kid, I liked the smell of gasoline. Then in the Army, I became a fuel handler, and wound up disliking the smell of gas and liking the smell of diesel. Kind of sweet smelling...

It’s pretty stanky. Even after you wash your hands the smell lingers for 2 days.

Yeah. Mrs. O.C. is complaining about it and the smell on my clothes, which she insisted I remove and leave in the washing machine in the garage.

First time I ever smelled used gear oil was when I changed the diff oil in my NA for the first time. Stuff was grey and nasty smelling.

GM’s synth is the worst. They added fake grape scent to it to make it better, but it is worse. Fake grape and gear oil smell mixed together *puke*

I had almost the opposite reaction... I came in smelling like gear oil the other day and my wife told me the smell reminded her of her dad who worked as a machinist for GM for years. I couldn’t wait to change out of the smelly clothes but she actually like it!
